Each hour, one person dies of melanoma. Be sun safe. Use 30-plus sunscreen. Apply frequently, especially after swimming. Wear sunglasses, a hat and limit your time in the sun. Get any suspicious moles checked out immediately by your doctor. Protect a Child
800-778-8411 • www.justpoolfences.comAs we enter into the pool season, safety in our own backyard becomes reality. Code fences are usually installed on the perimeter of our properties to maximize our yards, but do little in preventing our loved ones from direct access out the back doors. Protect-a-Child pool fence was designed specifically as an additional layer directly around the pool with the benefit that an adult can remove it. Interlocking, 12-foot, lightweight sections give the flexibility that parents and grandparents love. Protect-a-Child pool fences can be taken down entirely. There are no cumbersome gates that are climbable, heavy and obtrusive. By isolating the pool directly you give children the rest of the yard to play in, so moms and dads won’t have to chase the little toddlers away all summer long.

Long Island Bariatric Center

Obesity is on the rise and so are the numbers of surgeries performed each year for weight loss. According to Dory Ferraro, M.S., C.S., A.N.P., a nurse practitioner and assistant professor at Columbia University, and medical director of Long Island Bariatric Center, now there’s a safer, simpler approach to surgical weight loss with a procedure called laparoscopic adjustable gastric banding. Gastric banding is actually 10 times safer than the gastric bypass and can be performed as outpatient surgery. The silicone band, which is placed around the top of the stomach during surgery, is adjustable and, if necessary, removable. Patients typically lose half or more of their excess weight following this surgery. The Long Island Bariatric Center is an affiliate of the Columbia University Medical Center Obesity Surgery Program. Kids In Action, 252 Islip Ave., Islip

“My kid never listens to me!” All parents have that complaint sometimes, but for some children, the trouble isn’t that they’re simply choosing to hear only what they want. What may appear to be selective listening can involve auditory processing disorder (APD), a neurological condition that causes the brain to have difficulty interpreting the information they hear. “It’s not the same as a hearing problem,” explains Shelley Francis, who has been diagnosing and treating APD for 15 years as founder of East Meadow Hearing & Speech. The symptoms are varied, and may include delayed speech and language, difficult following multi-step directions, difficulty with abstract material, reading difficulty, etc. Many children diagnosed with ADD, dyslexia, LD, PDD or autism may have an auditory processing component. The good news: there’s treatment available. Call either office to find out how to have your child tested and to learn if they need treatment.
