Stimulant medications aren’t necessarily the answer to treating ADD/ADHD/LD/PDD or Autistic Spectrum Disorders in children. Obesity is on the rise and so are the numbers of surgeries performed each year for weight loss. Gastric banding is actually 10 times safer than the gastric bypass and can be performed as outpatient surgery. The silicone band, which is placed around the top of the stomach during surgery, is adjustable and, if necessary, removable. “My kid never listens to me!” All parents have that complaint sometimes, but for some children, the trouble isn’t that they’re simply choosing to hear only what they want. What may appear to be selective listening can involve auditory processing disorder (APD), a neurological condition that causes the brain to have difficulty interpreting the information they hear. “It’s not the same as a hearing problem,” explains Shelley Francis, who has been diagnosing and treating APD for 15 years as founder of East Meadow Hearing & Speech. The symptoms are varied, and may include delayed speech and language, difficult following multi-step directions, difficulty with abstract material, reading difficulty, etc. Many children diagnosed with ADD, dyslexia, LD, PDD or autism may have an auditory processing component.
