Parents of children with special needs —be it a developmental or physical disability, a mental health issue or some other situation requiring early intervention — all experience the stresses and worries that accompany our desire to fight for the services and help our children need, while making sure they can live as normal a life as possible. We’re fortunate on Long Island to have numerous programs and services that can help us do just that. We’ve compiled over 150 resources for you to begin with. Many parents will benefit from contacting more than one organization. Perhaps you want to call a program for referrals or for more information. One thing is certain: We can’t parent a special needs child without support, so reaching out is as helpful to you as it is to your child.
